Dr. Alice White Bussey: A Trailblazer in Leadership and Entrepreneurship [Black History]

Dr. Alice Mae White Bussey, born on July 31, 1947, in south DeKalb County, Georgia, is a distinguished entrepreneur and community leader whose career has been marked by numerous groundbreaking achievements.


As the tenth of twelve children, Bussey's early life was rooted in a strong family and community foundation.

Bussey's academic journey led her to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and urban studies, followed by a Master of Public Administration. 

Her commitment to public service became evident when she became Georgia's first U.S. Department of Labor federal representative, where she developed programs for seniors, welfare clients, and high school dropouts.

In 1985, Bussey shattered another glass ceiling by becoming the first woman elected president of the Atlanta Business League. 

Her entrepreneurial spirit flourished when she and her husband, James Bussey, co-founded Bussey Florist, making them the first African American FTD Florist in Atlanta.

 


Over three decades, the business expanded from a local retail operation to an international enterprise, reflecting Bussey's visionary leadership.

Beyond her business endeavors, Bussey has been a tireless advocate for economic empowerment and small business development. She has created 20 new businesses and has been instrumental in training and inspiring small business owners globally. 

Her influence extends to the Caribbean, where she has played a pivotal role in developing entrepreneurs across multiple islands.

Bussey's dedication to community service is further exemplified by her involvement in various organizations. She serves on the boards of The International Florists Association, Georgia Council of Visitors, and the Atlanta Private Industry Council, among others. 

Her leadership and contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including induction into the Atlanta Business League's Business Hall of Fame.


In recent years, Bussey has continued to share her wealth of knowledge and experience. In June 2021, she participated in a fireside chat with the Millionaire Mastermind Academy, focusing on entrepreneurial expansion and economic empowerment for women entrepreneurs. This event highlighted her ongoing commitment to fostering the next generation of business leaders.

Dr. Alice White Bussey's legacy is one of resilience, innovation, and unwavering dedication to uplifting her community. Her life's work serves as an inspiring testament to the impact of leadership rooted in service and empowerment.
