Investing in Yourself: A Journey of Lessons, Growth, and Freedom

Investing in Yourself: A Journey of Lessons, Growth, and Freedom

Between 2006 and 2010, I took my first steps into investing—not into stocks or real estate, but into people. I believed in the gifts of the friends I surrounded myself with and put up the money to fuel their dreams. But there was a missing link. At the time, neither they nor I had the habits, understanding, or clarity to make the most of those investments. The result? I took a couple of losses.

No blame, though. We were all limited in different ways, and those experiences taught me lessons I’d carry for life. I learned that while it’s important to see value in others, it’s even more crucial to understand what makes a great investment, communicate clear expectations, and observe how people invest in themselves.

That realization shifted my entire approach. I made the decision to pour my time, energy, and resources into the one person I could count on completely: myself.

The Shift to Self-Investment

At the time, I was in the music industry, writing lyrics. One of the last bars I penned captured my new mindset:
"I'm investing in myself now, 'cause I know... I'll never let myself down."

Those words became a guiding principle. I knew that as long as I stayed alive and committed to the work, my dreams would become reality. From that moment, I went all in.

I juggled three jobs and directed every dollar into my personal and professional development. I devoured books, set goals, and focused on becoming a better man. Over time, I started to see how my own gifts could create opportunities—and how to monetize what I had in my hands.

The Millionaire Lesson

As my circle expanded, I began having conversations with millionaire investors. One key realization stood out: if I wasn’t willing to invest $100, $1,000, or even $10,000+ into myself, why would anyone else?

The more I invested in myself, the more I saw the returns—not just in personal growth but in the way others viewed me. Writing those larger checks, taking risks, and growing my businesses attracted other investors who were willing to bet on me.

That’s when it all clicked.

The Qualities of a Great Investment

Successful people and investors are always paying attention. They’re watching how you:

  • Commit to yourself
  • Invest in yourself
  • Handle communication in both good and bad times
  • Grow personally and professionally
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence and resilience

They’re often willing to help, but only if you’re taking steps to help yourself first. Assistance isn’t always free, but having access to the guidance of someone who has walked the path can troubleshoot your issues and expedite your journey in ways that are priceless.

Freedom Isn’t Free

Today, as I sit in a Colorado hotel, sipping coffee, I reflect on the incredible life I’ve built. The freedom I’ve achieved didn’t come without cost. Freedom requires time, energy, and often money. It demands sacrifice and consistent effort.

So, I’ll leave you with these questions:

  • Are you a great investment?
  • Have you invested enough into yourself to attract someone who can help propel you forward?
  • Do you understand that while freedom isn’t free, the price you pay can lead to a life beyond your wildest dreams?

Invest in yourself. The world is watching.
